What is a powered wheelchair?
A powered (or power) wheelchair is an electric wheelchair driven by motors and a rechargeable battery, controlled with a joystick. Unlike a manual chair you don't push the wheels — and unlike a mobility scooter, a power wheelchair is designed for full-time seated mobility indoors and out.
How is the XSTO M4 different from a standard powered wheelchair?
Most UK powered wheelchairs use a fixed seat and four standard wheels. The M4 adds gyroscopic self-balancing on slopes up to 15°, a seat that raises from 347 mm to 650 mm, and Mecanum wheels for true 360° turning — so it handles tight kitchens, doorways and uneven ground that traditional power chairs struggle with.
Is a powered wheelchair suitable for indoor and outdoor use?
Yes. The M4 is built as an indoor/outdoor power wheelchair: compact enough for hallways and lifts, with a 15 km range and IPX4 water resistance for everyday outdoor use in UK weather.
Do I need a licence to use a powered wheelchair in the UK?
No licence is required for a Class 2 power wheelchair (up to 4 mph), which covers the XSTO M4 for pavement and indoor use. You also don't need to register it with the DVLA.
