HMRC VAT Notice 701/7
Pay 0% VAT on your wheelchair
Most of our customers qualify — and you don't need a doctor's letter. It's a simple self-declaration at checkout.
Do I qualify?
If you are chronically sick or have a disabling condition, and the chair is for your personal or domestic use — yes. No doctor's letter required.
How do I claim?
Tick the VAT exemption box on our checkout form and add your name plus a short note about your condition. That's it.
How much do I save?
20%. For example, the XSTO M4 is £3,195 with relief, instead of £3,834 including VAT.
Who counts as "chronically sick or disabled"?
HMRC defines this broadly. You qualify if you have:
- A physical or mental impairment with long-term and substantial effect on day-to-day activities
- A condition the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness — e.g. arthritis, MS, Parkinson's, stroke recovery, severe COPD, post-injury mobility loss
- A terminal illness
Temporary injuries (e.g. a broken leg) and old age on its own do not qualify under HMRC rules.
Common questions
- Do I need a doctor's letter?
- No — HMRC accepts a self-declaration. We collect it on our checkout form.
- Can a family member buy it for me?
- Yes — as long as the wheelchair is for the eligible person's personal use.
- What if I'm not sure I qualify?
- Get in touch. We'll talk it through with you in plain English — no pressure.
- Does it apply to all your products?
- It applies to wheelchairs designed for disabled use (M4, M4 Pro, X12, X12 Pro). The Nova A6 is sold as a robotics platform, so standard VAT applies.
